Job Summary

The High Tension Electrician will work as part of the Campus Services Electrical Distribution Group.  The position is involved in all aspects of installation, operations, metering, and maintenance of Harvard University’s low and medium voltage distribution systems, to ensure safe and reliable delivery of electric power to the campus.

Position Description

  • Work with electrical distribution systems and equipment (up to 15KV) that include, but is not limited to, underground manholes and ductbanks, control wiring and power cable systems, distribution type transformers, air and gas filled primary disconnect switches, power circuit breakers and switchgear, capacitor banks, power fuses, stationary control battery banks, protective relaying and metering, and electrical enclosures and controls.
  • Must observe and comply with all standard safety codes and practices and perform work in accordance with recognized trade and University standards.  
  • Performs other core skills of the trades and related duties as required.
     

Basic Qualifications

  • The candidate must have a Massachusetts Journey’s License for a minimum period of five years, extensive experience and/or documented training in various aspects of the installation, operation, testing and grounding, and maintenance of utility-type (up to 15KV) distribution systems and ancillary equipment; and experience in the installation and maintenance of miscellaneous low voltage systems and equipment and of electric motors and starting equipment.
  • Must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
  • Qualified candidates must have extensive experience and training relevant to the operation, maintenance, testing, grounding, and installation of medium-voltage equipment within the past five years of the job application.
     

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Must be able to work independently and take initiative, when necessary, as well as capable of working as a member of a team in conjunction with other trades.
  • Must observe and comply with all standard safety codes and practices, and perform work in accordance with regulatory and university standards.
  • Must be able to routinely communicate with peers and customers, in a clear and professional manner.
  • The candidate must be familiar with OSHA regulations concerning electrical safety and those concerning lockout/tagout procedures and work in confined spaces. 
  • All training courses concerning safety, operational, testing, grounding, and maintenance practices completed by the candidate must have been conducted by an organization recognized by the University as a qualified authority. 
  • The candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Candidate must be able to read and comprehend circuit diagrams and documents.
  • The candidate must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime hours, that include extended hours outdoors, in inclement weather.
  • Required to supply a complete set of hand tools.
  • Should be willing to use own vehicle throughout the campus.
     

Certificates and Licenses

  • Massachusetts Journeyman’s License
  • Must have a valid Massachusetts state drivers license and have a satisfactory driving record.
     

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stoop and bend repeatedly and work on hands and knees and other awkward positions for extended periods.  
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and to push, pull and transport piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs. with others (may use chain falls and come alongs for heavier lifting).  
  • Must be able to routinely walk to and from various buildings or work sites carrying tools, equipment, and other essentials.  
  • Must be able to work alone, in confined spaces and extreme temperatures, climb multiple sets of stairs, work off ladders, staging, lifts or other elevated platforms.
