Music Director
As a music director, you will supervise or direct all mainstage productions and acting (ACT) department classes, performances, and productions. You will be responsible for overseeing at least one music theater production each term and provide mentorship to participating students. You will musically prepare individuals and group ensembles for performances, national auditions, and special events. In this role, you will assist with obtaining and rehearsing outside musicians for university special events and maintain a network of local musicians to support them. You will work with internal partners to ensure the ensembles effectively represent the university throughout the academic year. When needed, you will assist with national recruitment events, auditions, and other duties assigned by the chair.
The successful candidate will be a strong pianist with skills in sight-reading, transposing, and conducting (choral and orchestral). The candidate should have a clear understanding of vocal pedagogy and instruction with extensive professional experience preparing singers for auditions and performances. They should also have a wide range of musical theater repertoire, including pop and rock. The candidate should be an industry leader with a professional network and affiliations of their own.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in music
- At least five years' experience directing musical groups or productions as a music supervisor/director, conductor, pianist, accompanist, or coach
- Familiarity with musical instrument digital interfaces and editing software
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in music
- At least 10 years of Broadway, national tour, or major regional theater experience as a music supervisor or director, conductor, pianist, accompanist, or coach
- National reputation in critically acclaimed music direction or conducting
- Demonstrated track record in cabaret and pop concert performances
Travel Required:
- Less than 10%
Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
