POSITION SUMMARY
The Occupational Therapist is responsible for enhancing the daily living and working capabilities of blind and visually impaired patients. This role involves implementing vision rehabilitation plans as prescribed by physicians or optometrists, focusing on empowering patients to lead independent, productive lives through personalized instruction, training, and assessment
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE
- Conduct individual and group assessments and training sessions on daily living and communication skills as per the physician/optometrist’s plan. Document activities, monitor progress, and adjust plans as needed.
- Develop and implement activities to teach work and life-management skills, including computer use, cooking, eating, dressing, and exercise, tailored to each patient’s abilities.
- Educate patients on effective use of lighting, contrast, eccentric viewing, magnification, and optical devices.
- Train patients in utilizing low vision devices, CCTVs, and other adaptive technologies as recommended.
- Provide guidance and support to patients' families and caregivers, keeping them informed of patient needs.
- Collaborate with the Medical Director and/or Director of the Rehabilitation Center to suggest assessment and instructional objectives for individual program plans.
- Complete patient documentation accurately using EMR software.
- Assist the Director in setting and achieving encounter goals and leading the OT team towards monthly and yearly objectives.
- Apply instructional techniques that accommodate patients’ unique sensory and physical needs.
- Facilitate inter-agency cooperation and provide assistance in determining needed services, including emergency preparedness programs and community exercises.
- Conduct research and gather data for physicians or clinicians as needed.
- Adhere to compliance standards, including HIPAA confidentiality and security, and Medicare/Medicaid documentation requirements.
- Stay updated on current practices through literature review, conferences, seminars, continuing education, and certification requirements.
- Perform monthly chart audits in line with private practice and/or rehabilitation agency policies and procedures.
- Travel within North Texas to provide occupational therapy assessment and training to patients if/when needed.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with physicians/optometrists to encourage referrals and promote the EDVRC.
- Educate physicians/optometrists and patients about Envision’s outreach and services program and its benefits.
- Manage a secure inventory of adaptive aides and optical devices while working remotely.
- Flexibility to perform other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
Education: Master’s or Doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy required.
Experience: 2 to 4 years of previous experience as an occupational therapist in a clinic or hospital setting is required. Experience working with disabled populations preferred.
Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to travel within North Texas to remote locations.
- Ability to collaborate remotely with EVRC Wichita OT’s and staff.
- Proficiency in computer applications and software is required.
- Experience with EMR systems required; Compulink Advantage EMR preferred.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity toward the need for assistive technology and low vision aides for people who are blind or have low vision.
- Possess interpersonal skills necessary to provide close support and consultation to other professionals.
- Ability to demonstrate good patient relations in a positive, motivating manner.
- Must be sensitive to the patient’s issues and treat all patients with dignity, respect and kindness.
- Must possess the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current Occupational Therapist (OT) license for state of Texas required.
- Current National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) required.
- Current Certified Low Vision Therapist (CLVT) certified by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP) required or be working towards this certification
- UNTWISE Independent Living Skills Training Certification preferred or to be completed within six months of hire.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification required.
