Position Purpose:
The Power Plant Operator I under direct Supervision assists in the operation of pumps, engines, blowers, generators and related equipment in the Power Plant of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Works a scheduled shift and will be subject to required emergency call in or shift coverage as Operational needs demand.
- Under the direct Supervision of Shift Supervisor or Lead person be required to perform the following tasks:
- Read and record meters for (pumps, gauges, motors etc....)
- Record tank levels, fuel level & oil levels.
- Operate equipment pertinent to their workstation (blowers, pumps)
- Open and close and adjust valves for tanks & pumps.
- Observe their process areas (pumps, motors, valves, flow) and record their findings.
- Receive petroleum products in bulk or drum form when received.
- Adjust / bleed pumps, traps as directed.
- Light housekeeping (sweep, mop, pick up trash and debris as directed)
- Inspect equipment for proper functionality.
- Maintain a logbook for the station they are operating.
- Create work requests for equipment found to be malfunctioning or broken.
- Wipe down engines and motors of accumulated oil and debris.
- Add oil and lubricants to motors and engines as needed.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed both inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
- The employee may be occasionally exposed to some noise, silica, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, greases, oils, electrical energy, solvents and vibration.
- The employee may work on slippery/uneven surfaces, around machinery with moving parts, moving objects/vehicles, ladder/scaffolding, below ground and may be exposed to water or other liquid materials.
- Maintain a high level of focus on health, safety and environment, ensuring safety within all activities.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
- High School Diploma/GED is required.
- Can be substituted for Trade School/Military Service or Technical School.
- 2-4+ years' of full-time satisfactory experience acquired within the last ten years in any one or a combination of the following: industrial construction activities; the repair or installation of commercial, industrial, or large residential machinery, piping, or electrical equipment; the operation of machine tools; the repair and overhaul of engines; residential or industrial plumbing; or the operation or repair of wastewater treatment plants or associated facilities experience in power plant O&M, diesel electric generating units, steam or hot water boilers, pumps, compressors and related equipment.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- No physical restrictions that would prevent them from performing physical labor.
- Excellent reading, math, writing, scientific, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to understand/execute written and oral instructions, read/understand complex technical instructions.
- Ability to read, interpret, and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, and computer consoles.
- Ability to interpret service manuals and drawings and SOPs.
- Excellent troubleshooting/problem solving skills, provides input for corrective actions and implements corrective actions as needed.
- Basic knowledge of the operation of power plant diesel electric generating equipment and related equipment.
- Knowledge of computerized PLC/SCADA systems, DCS control systems.
- Ability to maintain equipment, have an excellent mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to operate complex controls, processes, and equipment, and adjust accordingly to maintain proper efficient operation and compliance.
- Knowledge of power plant regulations, requirements & reporting.
- Knowledge of proper Environmental, Health and Safety policies, procedures and requirements.
- Must have the ability to maintain effective working relations w/ supervisors and Co-Workers.
- Must be able to work as a team in a teamwork-oriented environment.
- Must be safety conscious.
Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
- Valid NYS Driver's license and the ability to meet risk management guidelines.
