Job Summary
The position provides an excellent opportunity to develop advanced laboratory skills while contributing to cutting-edge research in tissue evolution and hematopoiesis.
Position Description
The Research Assistant will be required to collect, process, organize and summarize project data. Assist in other experiments as needed. This is an entry level, position that will require oversight from lab members or direct supervision from the PI.
Key Responsibilities:
- Breeding, genotyping, and managing the lab's mouse colonies.
- Euthanasia, dissection, and collection of bone marrow from mice.
- Blood collection via tail vein bleeds (live animals) and post-mortem.
- Preparation of cells for downstream applications, such as DNA isolation, immunostaining, or CRISPR-editing with lentiviruses.
- Conduct flow cytometry and PCR, with training provided if necessary.
- Collect, organize, and analyze experimental data, maintaining accurate and detailed records of laboratory activities and protocols.
- Contribute to research discussions and present findings in internal lab meetings.
- Assist with administrative and organizational lab tasks as needed.
Basic Qualifications
- College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in a related discipline.
- At least one year of related work experience (relevant coursework may count toward experience).
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Some related college courses preferred.
- Demonstrated interest in genetics, tissue evolution or hematopoiesis.
- Previous laboratory experience is preferred but not mandatory; training will be provided as needed.
- Experience with animal work, especially in tail vein bleeds, is preferred but not essential.
- Familiarity with flow cytometry, PCR, and other molecular biology techniques is beneficial.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn new techniques

Additional Information
This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.

Work Format Details
This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
About Us
The Naxerova Lab at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Genetics is seeking a motivated Research Assistant for a two-year commitment. Our lab investigates normal tissue and cancer evolution using both experimental and computational methods. A significant focus of our research is to explore the relationship between tissue turnover, lifestyle exposures, and the evolutionary trajectory of the hematopoietic system. We are particularly interested in understanding how lifestyle factors influence the abundance and phenotype of mutant cells.
