Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is seeking a full-time Senior Plumber to perform skilled maintenance tasks with a primary emphasis on plumbing maintenance related to maintenance repairs, rehabilitation, and construction projects for buildings, equipment and systems. This position will also perform skilled labor involving general maintenance skills including rough and finish carpentry, electrical, painting, and mechanical work. Work is inspected for satisfactory compliance with instructions, although routine repairs and work assignments are completed without supervision or close review.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Perform plumbing tasks related to maintenance, repairs, rehabilitation, and construction projects for buildings, equipment, and systems.
  • Assemble and install valves and fittings.
  • Install, repair, and maintain sinks, tubs, toilets, plumbing fixtures, appliances, trim, water heaters, water conditioners, underground storm, sanitary, and other water piping systems, water treatment equipment, piping, and controls.
  • Test piping systems and fixtures for leaks.
  • Ensure all installations, repairs, and maintenance meet the requirements for the appropriate codes.
  • Maintain all water fountain features and swimming pool maintenance (will require additional off campus education and certification).
  • Perform and/or assist with Back Flow Preventer annual testing and repairs (Certification required).
  • Order proper fittings, piping, and other plumbing related items to complete tasks.
  • Assist with repair of high temperature, steam plumbing lines and chilled water lines.
  • Assist housing maintenance with plumbing-related items when necessary.
  • Repair and maintain gas lines in buildings on campus and housing.
  • Repair and maintain fire and yard hydrants throughout campus and housing.
  • Repair or assist plumbing contractor with main water line breaks and outages.
  • Properly maintain all water softener systems and DI piping, vent lines, sewer lines, acid waste lines, and storm drains within a building, domestic cold and hot water systems in buildings.
  • Coordinate and assist with planned and unplanned water outages.
  • Be available for after hours emergency plumbing issues and major water leaks and outages.
  • Properly maintain sewer and sanitary pump floats and ejector pumps.
  • Solder/braze copper pipe, properly assemble and glue up PVC pipe and fittings, and properly use ProPress tool and fittings.
  • Use drain augers and sink machines to clear drain lines.
  • Thread pipe for various applications.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolding, and lifts to repair/install plumbing lines.
  • Assist with training other maintenance mechanics on all shifts to complete plumbing repairs.


Required Knowledge and Skills

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Vocational training and/or experience in trades including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, and/or heating and air conditioning, knowledge of its practices, procedures, materials and tools, skills in a variety of trades, and an ability to plan and layout job assignments required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Required Back Flow Device Certification if performing tests and/or repairs on back flow devices.
  • Required CPO Certification for swimming pool and Spa maintenance.


Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Recommended qualifications include four years’ experience in trades named. State Licensed at Journeyman level or higher preferred.


Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

Standard full-time work hours are scheduled Monday through Friday 7 am – 3 pm. Occasional irregular hours or overtime may be required to complete work orders.

This position is considered essential.

When the University closes due to inclement weather or another emergency, this position is required to report to work to perform snow and/or ice removal or other clean-up work following severe weather or other emergencies.
