Departments of Art History & Archaeology and African & African American Studies: Assistant Professor, tenure-track

The Department of Art History and Archaeology (AHA) and the Department of African and African American Studies (AFAS) at Washington University in St. Louis invite applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of the Archaeology and Art History of Africa or the African Diaspora World to begin in the fall semester of 2024-2025. Previous or current participation in field archaeology is required. Possible subfields include the archaeology and visual culture of African sites of cultural heritage; the material and artistic cultures of Islam in Africa; and trade, habitation, and histories of enslaved persons in and beyond Africa, in such areas as North America or the Caribbean. We seek a candidate committed to the analysis of race/Blackness. The successful candidate will demonstrate interest in sharing research in public spheres, including possible engagement in the growing field of Critical Heritage Studies and Public History.

Teaching and service duties will be divided between the Department of Art History and Archaeology (75%) and the Department of African and African-American Studies (25%). Duties will include teaching two courses per semester (three a year in AHA and one a year in AFAS), conducting research, writing for publication, advising students, participating in department governance, and university service. The successful candidate must show strong promise of scholarly achievement and the ability to make significant contributions to both departments. Candidates must be prepared to teach undergraduate courses at all levels and graduate seminars in the visual, material, and/or urban histories of Africa and its diaspora.

Diversity and Inclusion are core values at Washington University, and we seek to create inclusive classrooms and environments in which a diverse array of students can learn and thrive.
